The Landwehr – Schutterspark
A great mystery in Schutterspark
The Schutterspark is home to one of Brunssum’s greatest archaeological mysteries: the medieval Landweer. This imposing earthwork, which remains intact for over 1 km, dates back to the 15th century. This border defence forms part of a larger complex that stretched between Schinveld and Nieuwenhagen. Part of the moat, flanked on both sides by ramparts, is up to 22 metres wide in places and still raises questions among archaeologists.
Schutterspark: A top destination, then and now!
In the past, Schutterspark was THE place where families from near and far gathered for exciting attractions like a cable car, a zoo, and the iconic Schutterhuske. The park was originally created by the state mines as a recreation area for miners and their families – and it’s still full of life today. From 1910 onwards, water was extracted here for the mines and the city. Now, the park overflows with new adventures.
